1. Iodine

Due to its important role in fetal and infant development and thyroid hormone production, iodine is a critical nutrient for proper health at all life stages (1). Iodine is an element that is needed for the production of thyroid hormone and since the body does not make iodine, it has become an essential part of your diet (2). If you do not have enough iodine in your body, you cannot make enough thyroid hormone that can lead to enlargement of the thyroid, hypothyroidism and to intellectual disabilities in infants and children whose mothers were iodine deficient during pregnancy (3). One should be careful in supplementing with iodine if you are not deficient because research shows that long-term exposure to excessive iodine levels can trigger or worsen thyroid conditions, including goiter, nodules, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (4). 

2. Zinc

Zinc is connected to thyroid function in more than one way. When zinc levels are low, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)  is not created, which results in low levels of thyroid hormones T4 and T3 (5). Zinc is also an essential part of the enzyme deiodinase, which converts T4 into functional T3. If zinc is low or missing from the body, T3 cannot be made (6). Low zinc levels are associated with increased levels of autoimmunity – as seen through high amounts of anti-thyroid antibodies (TPO and Tg) in thyroid patients (7).

3. Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency is linked to an increased risk of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and to hypothyroidism. Hence, experts recommend regular checkup for vitamin D levels in all thyroid patients in order to address any deficiencies (8). A study published in 2018 in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism found that vitamin D supplements improved thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels in subjects with hypothyroidism as well as thyroid antibodies in people with autoimmune thyroiditis (9). It’s difficult to get enough vitamin D from a combination of diet and sun exposure, so supplementation is needed. It is recommended to take it with your highest-fat meal of the day, often dinner, for best absorption (10). 

4. Omega-3 Fatty Acid

The EPA and DHA, two of the fatty acids found in Omega-3s, give rise to metabolic by-products called resolvins, according to a recent study and it is important to note that the thyroid controls the metabolism (11). Resolvins can reduce inflammation and even it from occurring. These substances impact inflammatory cell function in four ways like influencing complex lipid, lipoprotein, metabolite, and hormone concentrations that in turn act on inflammation, acting directly on inflammatory cells via surface or intracellular “fatty acid receptors”, combining chemically with oxygen on the cellular level to form new substances that affect inflammatory cells and assisting in the regulation of many cell and tissue responses, including aspects of inflammation and immunity by physically altering membranes and by affecting cell signal pathways (12). 

5. Selenium

The thyroid is the organ that has the highest concentration of selenium in the body. Selenium plays a key role in the thyroid gland’s ability to produce thyroid hormone. Hence, having an optimal amount of selenium in your diet is vital not just for preventing thyroid disease, but for your overall health (13). It helps the thyroid to produce thyroid hormone, convert T4 into T3, and can lower thyroid peroxidase antibodies (14). Too much selenium supplementation or high intake of selenium from the combination of food and supplements, however, can be toxic (15).

It is important to know, however, that for people with hypothyroidism, taking a synthetic version of the hormone in pill form can help them achieve healthy hormone levels (16). But, there are some foods, medications and other supplements that should be avoided when taking your thyroid hormone (17):

  • iron supplements or multivitamins containing iron
  • calcium supplements
  • antacids that contain magnesium or aluminum
  • sucralfate (Carafate) and certain other ulcer medications
  • certain cholesterol-lowering drugs
  • soybean flour, cottonseed meal, walnuts
  • foods and supplements containing soy

Should there is a need to consume these foods, take them a few hours before or after taking your thyroid medication. And you may also talk with your doctor about a daily schedule that will help reduce your risk of unhealthy interactions (18). Moreover, the reality is that dietary supplements and over-the-counter medications have bioactive components, and the potential risks and benefits of these products should be evaluated just like any prescription medication.
